The Barcelona Cathedral would be the most beautiful church in most cities, but in Barcelona it plays second fiddle to the epic Sagrada Familia – but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t see both.
Here, I’m going to show you how to get to Sagrada Familia from the Barcelona Cathedral (and vice versa) so you can make this possible.
⚠️ 2023 Warning ⚠️: It’s now mandatory to book your Sagrada Familia tickets in advance.
The only way to guarantee your spot is by booking Sagrada Familia tickets online:
- 🎟️ Buy now: Sagrada Familia Fast Track Admission (skip the lines)
- 👨✈️ Buy now: Sagrada Familia Guided Tours in English (90 minute guided tour – double the length!)
- 🗼Buy now: Sagrada Familia Entrance + Towers (access all five floors)
The 4.5 km trip can be done in various ways but I recommend using the metro:
There will be a bit of walking involved here, though that’s not necessarily a bad thing in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter.
First, from the square in front of the Barcelona Cathedral you’ll need to walk to Via Laietana (the busy street to the right if you’re looking out into the square from the church).
Take a right here and follow it down to the Jaume I stop of the Barcelona metro.
Take the yellow line of metro four stops and get off at Verdaguer – from here it’s just a 5 minute walk to Sagrada Familia. The entire trip should take about 20 minutes.
Prefer taking the bus to Sagrada Familia from the Barcelona Cathedral?
When you’re facing the big square outside of the Cathedral, take a right until you get to Via Laietana. Turn left and follow the street for seven minutes all the way up to Plaza Urquinaona.
Here, right in front of the Burger King you’ll grab the #19 bus (Sant Genis).
Take it for six stops and then get off at the València – Diagonal stop. From here it is a short five minute walk.
In all, the bus trip between Barcelona Cathedral and Sagrada Familia takes about 25 minutes.
No matter what Barcelona public transport gets you between these two amazing sights, if you’re doing a full on Barcelona sightseeing itinerary I suggest using the Hola Barcelona Travel Card to get around.
With it you’ll get unlimited daily travel for around €7.00 a day.
The ability to save money and time by booking this pass in advance is one of the great Barcelona travel secrets,
