22 Best Bars in Barcelona in 2023 for Epic Drinks & Food

The best bars in Barcelona are those that are truly able to leverage the city’s sunny terraces, multicultural vibes, and local Spanish wines.

Whether you’re looking for the cocktail of your life or just cheap, cold beer in a stunning square, the top Barcelona bars will have it for you.

So let’s put a few ice cubes in the glass and get stirring.

The Best Bars in the Gothic Quarter

Bar La Plata

€€ Informal tapas | Carrer de la Mercè 28 | Metro: Drassanes (L3) | Website

This bar is for you if: you want one of Barcelona’s best tapas bars.

The very simple recipe for the success of this bar is being comfortable in its own skin.

Dating back to 1945, this tiny bar hasn’t wavered a bit and offers the very same four delicious tapas: pintxos with sausage or anchovy, fried smelts, and a delicious tomato salad – all accompanied by great wine.

There’s an almost countryside atmosphere here, and the flavours are unmistakably traditional.

Even if it’s not the easiest bar to find a seat, it’s worth passing by for an energizing snack or pint.

Drink to get: vermouth or red wine.

Ocaña

€€-€€€ | Coffee and cocktail | Plaza Reial 13-15 | Metro: Drassanes (L3) | Website

This bar is for you if: you want a bit of style without pushing it too much.

A beautiful spot found in the magical Plaza Reial with an old architecture base given a modern face-lift to create a style all to itself. Let’s call this the place of a thousand faces: a modern cafe, a tapas restaurant, a skillfully crafted cocktail bar, and a club with live music.

Whether you’re looking for a late-afternoon aperitif near La Rambla, a place to sit down and eat after a long day sightseeing, or a dance with your friends in an underground club, there’ll be something for you here.

Drink to get: blueberry sangria, anything off the long gin list.

Craft Barcelona

€€ | Craft beer | Carrer del Paradís 4 | Metro: Jaume I (L4) | Website

After a long day of sightseeing, a great place to wind up is super central Craft Barcelona – just a stone’s throw from Plaça Sant Jaume and the Barcelona Cathedral.

It’s a place with tasty tap beers and gourmet burgers – I like to grab a seat outside in the street and hear the hustle and bustle of the city pass by. The upstairs area also has large screens for big football matches.

The mushroom or ham croquetas (croquettes) are one of the best-value Spanish snacks in the city. Even better? There are all sorts of events, some even in English, such as comedy nights and live band karaoke.

Drink to try: any of the IPAs.

Sub Rosa

€€   Cocktail  |  Carrer d’en Rauric 23  | Metro: Barceloneta (L4) |  Website

This neighbourhood gem is hidden in the Gothic Quarter and is a perfect reflection of its vibe. With its moody, brash decorations and a small venue, it gives a cozy, local feel from the moment you enter. Although you might not be able to find a seat right away, just hang tight because chairs will open up.

What’s more? You can choose from an excellent array of cocktails. And the best part? Mojitos are only €2.90 every day from 6-10 pm! So, grab one and relax in the bar’s cozy atmosphere.

During the recent world cup, the bar proudly proclaimed itself the anti-world cup bar of choice! So don’t expect any TVs, just a dark old-school cocktail bar which more than reasonable prices.

Drink to try: gothic forest or mojitos

The Best Bars in El Born

Antic Teatre

€€ | Beer terrace | Carrer de Verdaguer i Callís 12 | Metro: Urquinaona (L4) | Website

This bar is for you if: you like a bohemian terrace under trees.

One of the coolest bars in Barcelona is famous for its spacious patio that’s a hit with locals and tourists alike. You’ll find it just a few steps away from the Palau de la Musica in one of the Born’s characteristic tiny streets.

This is one of the best informal places to kick back and relax with a beer and fresh air. If you need to catch up with some work on the laptop, the free WiFi here makes this the classic place.

You’ll put back round after round under the shade-casting trees of the open terrace and observe other interesting ‘fauna’ that populate the bar: artists, young hipsters, and old locals from the neighbourhood.

Drink to try: a cheap quinto of beer (only 200ml, genius as it stays cold the whole time!).

El Xampanyet

€€-€€€ | Classic tapas | Carrer de Montcada 22 | Metro: Jaume I (L4) | Website

This bar is for you if: you want to stuff yourself in the real Spain.

Even if it finds itself in one of the most tourist-heavy streets in Barcelona, Xampanyet has managed to conserve an air of tradition without pretense – for this reason, local after local has fallen in love with this tapas bar.

Here you’ll find locals and tourists alike jockeying for position at the bar to grab glasses of its semi-sweet sparkling white wine accompanied by classic Spanish tapas: Serrano ham, cheeses, anchovies, and Spanish tortillas.

Another rarity found here for the number of tourists is the friendliness of the staff.

Drink to try: the homemade xampanet sparkling wine.

Paradiso

€€-€€€ | Cocktail/speakeasy | Carrer de Rera Palau 4 | Metro: Barceloneta (L4) | Website

This bar is for you if: you wanna feel like 007 sipping cocktails with the possibility of pastrami.

Tucked away behind prohibition curtains in an inconspicuous pastrami sandwich joint is one of the best cocktail bars in Barcelona. Just make sure you arrive with patience, as you’ll probably have to wait to get in due to limited seating.

From cocktails served in glass pipes to dry ice to being smoked in front of your eyes, the creativity of the sophisticated bar really shines through. And guess what? The pastrami and smoked meats are delicious!

Drink to try: long island iced tea in a teapot, pineapple mai tai.

Clubhaus

€€-€€€   Cocktail  |  Av. del Marquès de l’Argentera, 13  | Metro: Barceloneta (L4) |  Website

A brilliant multi-space concept famous for food, art, and even some play.

What stands out right away is their stunning cocktail bar with a mountain of bottles, flame projected brick background, and friendly English-fluent mixologists.

The phrase ‘jack of all trades master of none’ does not apply here – this massive bar is a fabulous coworking space during the day, serves great Mexican food, is a good place for ping pong and darts, and turns into a club at night.

This is the ultimate stop for large groups, Barcelona stag dos, team-building nights and more.

Drink to try: margaritas or a negroni.

Collage Cocktail Bar

€€   Cocktail  |  Carrer dels Consellers 4 | Metro: Barceloneta (L4) |  Website

If you’re looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of El Born, look no further than Collage Cocktail Bar. This place is a total oasis of calm and sophistication, perfect for lovebirds or anyone who wants to escape the madness outside.

One of the best things about Collage is that they serve up classic cocktails, so you don’t have to worry about trying something you’ve never heard of before. Instead, you can kick back with a drink you know and love, which is always a good feeling.

The atmosphere at Collage is warm and inviting, thanks to the elegant decor and the friendly staff. It’s the kind of place where you can relax and enjoy the company of others without feeling rushed or crowded.

Drink to try: any classic rum-based cocktail

The Best Bars in Raval

Barna Brew

€€ | Craft beer | Carrer Parliament 45 | Metro: Sant Antoni (L2) | Website

What do you get when a Londoner and a Cypriot meet in the UK and end up in Belgium?

The simple answer is a great beer. These two friends actually entered a prestigious Belgian beer contest as amateurs and not only did well – they won the whole damn thing.

Now they’ve taken their talents as pros to Barcelona.

The on-site brewery churns out half a dozen originals as well as two seasonals, a unique take on Belgian classics. Throw in a delicious paired food menu, and this is the Barcelona beer spot.

Drink to try: Moreneta Bruna (touches of citrus, cinnamon, and coffee).

Marsella

€€ | Old school speakeasy | Carrer de Sant Pau 65 | Metro: Liceu (L3) | Website

This bar is for you if: if you want to black out gracefully like a 1920s poet.

People say it’s the oldest bar in Barcelona, and judging by the decor, they’re probably right. The bar was founded in 1820 and was one of the places Hemingway went for drinks in Barcelona.

This is really just a dusty cowboy saloon from 1800s. The bar is never immune from rumours of its closure for something a bit more wholesome, and yet it lives on! It is the Raval, after all.

Here you’ll find a young, spirited crowd diving head first into traditional absinthe rituals: soaking a sugar cube and lighting it on fire above the glass. Careful! These drinks are really strong.

Drink to try: absinthe.

Club Caribbean Barcelona

€€ | Cocktail | Carrer de les Sitges 5 | Metro: Catalunya (L1-L3) | Website

From just outside, you’ll notice a small door and a port hole at this hidden bar. In any other situation, I’d suggest you walk right on by, but with this one, you won’t regret it!

This tiny place that fits just 16 people is decked out like the cabin of a Cuban boat. It’s here that you can order a wide variety of cocktails from one of the two experienced bartenders.

I hit this place up after a company party once and got some pretty amazing versions of classics like daiquiri, pisco sour, and caipirinha, and for you British readers, they’re even in on the Pimm’s!

Drink to try: any and all.

La Whiskeria

€€-€€€ | Whiskey | Carrer de les Sitges 3 | Metro: Catalunya (L1/L3) | Website

This bar is for you if: whiskey flows through your veins.

A hole in the wall Scottish style saloon with a light speakeasy feel.

It features more than 200 brands of whiskey, from the single malts of Speyside to far-out features like Taiwanese whisky Kavalan, which beat out Scottish and English contemporaries in a blind taste test on Burns Night in Leith, Scotland.

You’ll get this story and others from the knowledgeable bartenders – just make sure to go upstairs and see the mini whiskey museum with bottles older than the building itself.

Pesca Salada

€€ | Informal cocktail | Carrer de la Cera 32 | Metro: San Antoni (L2) | Website

This bar is for you if: you’re a ginandtonicaholic.

If bars this small were even legal, that’s news to me! This ocean-themed sardine can bar in the heart of the Raval is a great place to drink big glass gin and tonics made with the proprietor’s homemade gin.

In all, you have over 20 types of gin with some pretty original ingredients like rose petals, rosemary, and peppercorns that really give the cocktails life. There’s a dedication to the drinks here that makes it one of the top bars in Barcelona for quality-price ratio.

This is a great cozy spot for Barcelona couples – though larger groups may want to look elsewhere!

Drink to try: whatever gin and tonic suits you.

33/45

€€ | Stylish cocktail | Carrer de Joaquín Costa 4 | Metro: San Antoni (L2) | Website

This bar is for you if: you want to get sloppy for cheap and meet people.

Let yourself sink into the super comfy couches at this bar, one of the most vivacious in all of Raval, for a great place to chat away the night sipping on reasonably priced drinks like a €2.50 spritz.

Make a visit to 33/45, and you surely won’t find any washed-up locals. The students (and yes, hipsters) are the ones that bring this bar alive. The bar is decorated with a contrast of recycled furniture and modern art.

Make sure you make your way to the back by the sandwich bar – they have a great aperitivo on Sundays.

Drink to try: spritz, beer, or gin and tonic.

L’Ovella Negra Ramblas

€ | Beer & Tapas | Carrer de les Sitges, 5 | Metro: Universitat (various) | Website

It’s a legendary joint that all the rockers know about! But did you know that it all started in this rustic tavern located right next to Las Ramblas?

Real locals know the deal – the perfect night out starts with dinner, a few cold ones and some table football matches to kick things off. And let me tell you, this place is something special. You can feel the history and character as soon as you step through the door.

Sure, the Ovella Negra has got a massive industrial ship over in Marina, but don’t let that distract you from the fact that everything started right here. This is where the legend was born back in 1965 – and the spirit of good times and great memories live on.

Drink to try: Any ice-cold local beer

The Best Bars in Barceloneta

Bar Leo

€ | Post-beach drinks | Carrer de Sant Carles 34 | Metro: Barceloneta (L4) | Website

This bar is for you if: you want to get day drunk and see impromptu Spanish guitar concerts.

Put a coin in the jukebox and get moving to the sounds of Rumba with a beer in hand, and you’ll have found true happiness. At least that’s what Leo, the eccentric proprietor of this super kitsch bar dedicated to 1970’s flamenco star called Bambino, would have you believe.

This bar really gets hopping on Saturdays when hundreds of patrons drink in the street and chat the afternoon away. If you’re lucky, you’ll find free flamenco guitar music.

This is the pre or after-beach drink stop and one of the city’s great cheap bars.

Drink to try: beer or vermouth.

Santa Marta

€€€ | Beachside snack | Carrer de Grau i Torras 59 | Metro: Barceloneta (L4) | Website

This bar is for you if: you want a reasonably priced beer and snack with a sea view.

If your dream is a couple of countries off and you’re looking for Italy, then come here for a gigantic glass of the summer’s most refreshing alcoholic beverage: the spritz.

The tables right along one of Barcelona’s best beaches make this a great bar with a view and an optimal place to get some sun and even order a classic pizza, piadina, or panini.

For those looking for something a bit more exotic, the nachos with guacamole or the sangria are also great options.

if you’re looking for a unique and character-filled bar that serves up some delicious tapas, then you definitely need to check out El Vaso de Oro. This place is styled like a narrow cruise ship bar, but don’t let that fool you – it’s packed with personality!

One thing you definitely can’t miss when you visit El Vaso de Oro is their mouth-watering chorizo and patatas bravas. And to wash it all down, they’ve got some seriously tasty beer that’s made from centuries-old recipes crafted by the beer masters. They only use the best ingredients, so you know you’re in for a treat.

This bar has been around for over 50 years, so they really know what they’re doing. They open up right onto the street, so you can enjoy your meal while soaking up the bustling daytime or buzzing nighttime atmosphere.

El Vaso de Oro

€-€€ | Tapas & Beer | Carrer de Balboa 6 | Metro: Barceloneta (L4) | Website

The Best Bars in Gracia

Vermuteria del Tano

€-€€ | Vermuteria | Carrer de Joan Blanques 17 | Metro: Joanic (L4) | Website

This bar is for you if: you want to try a traditional bodega.

If there’s a Gracia bar where you absolutely have to have homemade vermouth, it’s this.

This veritable museum dedicated to Barcelona’s favourite drink is famous for its bar that is straight out of the 1950s. The vintage ads, chalkboard menus, oak casks, and charismatic owner Tano really bring this place to life.

If your stomach starts rumbling, you’ll be in good hands: the long list of jarred preserves here, like stuffed olives, anchovies, and even octopus and squid, are the ultimate accompaniment to your afternoon drink.

Drink to try: vermouth.

Bar Canigò

€€-€€€ | Classic tapas cafe | Carrer de Verdi 2 | Metro: Fontana (L3) | Website

This bar is for you if: you want to blend in like a local in a top bar.

Of all the places to have drinks in Barcelona, Bar Canigó is the one that just oozes relaxation and happiness. It’s beloved by locals for never giving in to passing trends and keeping it real over the years with its marble tables, old-school columns, and scratched-up mirrors.

Go for patatas bravas (fried potato chunks with spicy sauce) or boquerones (picked sardines).

Drink to try: beer or vermouth.

Pipa Club

€€€ | Formal jazz | Santa Eulalia 21 Baixos | Metro: Verdaguer (L4/L5) | Website

This bar is for you if: you’ve dreamed of having a drink with Sherlock Holmes.

Semi-hidden in a tiny Gracia street is this bar that’s primarily a pipe smoking club – though you wouldn’t know it from the complete lack of smokers and the juicy live music offerings throughout the week.

The eccentric retro bar has a very British feel with its diffused light, jazz music, lonely corners, and long wooden bars populated by patrons telling hard-luck stories to bartenders.

This is a great place for couples, and I have a friend who swears on it for dates.

Keep an eye out on the Pipa Club calendar for the many blues, swing, and jazz concerts.

Drink to try: a smokey scotch.

Sol Soler

€€ | Outdoor tapas | Plaça del Sol 21 | Metro: Fontana (L3) | Website

This bar is for you if: you crave quality homemade food and a great atmosphere.

You wouldn’t dream of spending an evening in Gracia without having a drink in one of its many picturesque squares. Here you’ll receive a front-row seat to the area’s biggest plaza: Plaça del Sol.

There’s no better place to grab a beer in the sun and snack on cheap, quality food. Try the quiches, croquettes, or even the chicken wings, and you won’t be disappointed. Just make sure you sit outside.

Drink to try: Moritz local beer.

Bodega Marin

€ | Spanish Bodega | Carrer de Milà i Fontanals 72 | Metro: Joanic (L4) | Website

Next up on the list is a rustic little spot with only a few seats, but that’s what makes it so special. Trust me, you’ll want to check it out!

If you’re unfamiliar with Spanish Bodegas, let us give you the rundown. They’re basically old-school wine cellars that are usually jam-packed with barrels of the good stuff. And this one is no exception, it’s an absolute must-visit while you’re in Barcelona.

Now, there are a few seats inside, but the real way to experience this place is by asking for outside drinks (or “bebidas a fuera,” as the locals say). They’ll give you your choice of vino for just €2 in a plastic cup, so you can join the crowd of people outside on the street.

And don’t worry if wine isn’t your thing, they also serve canas of Estrella Damn for just €1.50.

Drink to try: any of the barrelled wine or vermouth

The Best Bars in Eixample

Cocovail Beer Hall

€€ | American | Carrer d’Aragó 284 | Metro: Passeig de Gracia (L4/L5,L7) | Website

Americans lusting for home? This one is for you.

What was once an old textile factory just around the corner from Casa Batllo got a facelift in 2016 – in the form of a pacific surfing concept American beer hall.

Here you’ll sup up 24 craft beers and accompany them with the best wings in Barcelona. It’s also a great place to watch the NFL, all sorts of American sports, and European football.

Drink to try: Any of the craft beers.

Boca Chica

€€€ | Trendy cocktail | Passatge de la Concepció 12 | Metro: Diagonal (L3/L5) | Website

This bar is for you if: you want an elegant night to remember.

This refined and seductive bar near Casa Batllo brings a certain elegance that matches the streets outside on the luxurious Passeig de Gracia. Here you’ll pay quite a bit for the drinks, but the quality found here is well worth it.

The low couches are filled with cool international people but the most spectacular part? The bathrooms!

Drink to try: Moscow mule or any of their signature cocktails.

Dry Martini

€€€ | High-end cocktail | Carrer d’Aribau 162-166 | Metro: Diagonal (L3/L5) | Website

This bar is for you if: your religion is cocktail drinking.

Professional bar staff, a dream bar for cocktail lovers, and an interesting selection of jazz music.

Not only is it one of the best cocktail bars in Barcelona but Dry Martini was voted one of the sixth-best bar in the world by Drinks International. This is likely thanks to the legendary cocktail creations of its creative bartenders.

Just watch out for the flying glasses!

Drink to try: absolutely essential not to leave without trying a martini.

El Vélodromo

€€€ | Gastro-bar | Carrer de Muntaner 213 | Metro: Diagonal (L3/L5) | Website

This spot used to be the go-to place for businessmen who would come here to unwind, play cards, and chat after work. But let me tell you, it’s become a legend in the Eixample district– virtually symbolic of the neighbourhood!

Nowadays, El Velodromo is a unique joint that stands out from the rest. You can come here from 7:30 am – 1 am (2 on Fri & Sat) and try out some of the most delicious dishes you’ve ever tasted, thanks to the culinary genius of Catalan Michelin-starred chef Jordi Vilà. The food is out of this world, I tell you!

And the atmosphere? Oh boy, it’s one of a kind! El Velodromo is not your typical bar, no sir. It’s interesting and rustic yet distinguished at the same time.

So if you’re looking for an ice-cold local beer with some elevated Catalan cuisine, stop at El Velodromo, and you won’t be disappointed.

Drink to try: a fresh Moritz

How to Go For Drinks in Barcelona

First off, the age-old question is, “where are the best bars in Barcelona”? Well, I feel that the best neighbourhoods for thirsty travellers are the Gothic Quarter, the Raval, the Born, and Eixample.

And now that you’ve stuck with me and made it this far, you’ve got a list of the hottest spots in each individual neighbourhood to get your Catalan crawl underway.

Secondly, unlike in North America or the UK, most bars in Barcelona don’t get busy until about 11 pm and are often open quite late. Before 11 pm, most locals are out enjoying some tapas and a few beers before the party gets started.

Also, if you’re looking to use these bars as a springboard to some of Barcelona’s best clubs, you should know that discos likely won’t get crowded until about 2 am. So I’d recommend heading to Barcelona’s top restaurants for dinner late and starting as late as possible.

Most Spaniards drink una caña (a small glass of beer) or una mediana (a cheap bottle of beer). If you want the cheap draft beer, you should ask for one of these. Otherwise, the barman might pour you a pint of the expensive stuff.

Here are some average prices to ensure you aren’t getting ripped off:

  • A small glass of beer: €2.00 – €3.00.
  • A glass of house wine: €2.50 – €3.50.
  • Vermouth: €1.50 – €2.50.
  • Cocktails and highballs: €7.00 (basic highball), €10.00 – €13.00 (signature, club).

If you need a taxi, sign up for Spain’s taxi-sharing system app called Free Now. Not only is it super convenient and quick like Uber, but you’ll get €5.00 off your first trip by following my Barcelona taxi guide.

Also! In summer, a great way to start off the evening is to grab a cocktail with a view at any of Barcelona’s best rooftop bars. Most can be found within Barcelona hotels, though non-guests are usually welcome.

And finally… do you have to tip in Barcelona bars?

No!

Hi Ash! So much good information on your site! We will be celebrating NYE in Barcelona next month and are trying to find something good to do for a couple, we are in our late 20s and i'm trying to find something that has a crowd more around our age and maybe with some live music, do you have any recommendations?? Thank you so much!

Hi Kiah, If you haven't already I'll point you to my article on visiting during NYE: https://www.barcelonahacks.com/barcelona-new-years-eve/ For live music I would check the usual suspects like Pipa Club, Harlem Jazz Club, JazzSí, or ElParaigua. Another good shout could be Marula. Again though, haven't heard the specific events of these places yet but on any other day they would be my go-to :) Ash

Hope you won't mind 2 questions here...one on topic, one off: 1) Did you ever find a rooftop bar open in the winter (11/24-11/27)? Even if the windows are closed it'd still be cool (see what I did there?) 2) Are all shrimp served head on? I love shrimp but am super weirded out by those little beady eyes. I'm a spoiled American :(

I think the only one that's open is the one at Hotel H1898 so you may want to try here. As for the shrimp... if you order just prawns at a restaurant they'll come head on though if you get dishes made with them (like gambas al ajillo, one of my favourites) they generally come head off. That said, you can ask them to take them off if you like! No shame in that. If they don't speak English (rare) just say "me podeis quitar las cabezas por favor?" (meh pohdays keetar las ka-bay-thas por fabor?) and they'll do it!

Hi Ash, I’ve been looking through your site which is brilliant and you’ve given us some great ideas on where to go when we get to Barcelona next week. We have been twice before and this time we are staying in Motel One Cuitadella and was hoping that you could recommend some other good bars that we could try. I really liked La Fianna when we went in 2016 so will be going again as the music was good, and also La Luna for a few mojitos and tapas which is a great bar, I loved the gothic interior. Can you recommend anywhere else we could go to? I’ll be going with my husband and we’re both in our early 40’s but do enjoy going to good bars when we’re out in Liverpool, UK. Thanks, Sharon.

Hi Sharon, Thanks for writing in and your kind words! Let's see, I definitely think the comprehensive list above covers a lot - if there's a good bar I've been to in the city is it probably in this list! Other than this however especially if you like live music I would recommend Harlem Jazz Club and also El Paraigua... not only are they cool spots with nice drinks but the music has always been great. These should all keep you busy :) Ash

Thanks Ash for those ideas. We will try El Paraigua but it looks like Harlem Jazz Club is shut until October due to holidays. I'm sure we will have a great time trying out your recommendations from your list. Thanks again.

Hi Ash, we are a bunch of guys in the mid 30s to 40s that will spend a weekend in Barcelona in October. I am trying to setup an evening schedule for thursday-sunday so we don't end up wandering around. It would be great to get some advice from you, as we are not very familiar with Barcelona. Could you recommend some nice cocktail bars, lounge bars (rooftops if there are any open in Oct) and clubs where for people our age (or slightly less). We are not particularly looking for massive techno clubs with many dance floors packed with 20-year-olds, but rather places where you can get good drinks, listen to good music and mingle. Also, if you happen to know of any local micro brew pubs, that would be of interest too. Many thanks in advance.

Hi Fredrik, First off I will have to stress that the list above has taken a lot of time and so cocktail bars like Paradiso, Boca Chica, and Dry Martini will be right up your alley. I've got a list of rooftop bars here: https://www.barcelonahacks.com/rooftop-bars-barcelona/ Again, without knowing exactly when you're in town it's hard to say which one you can go to. Some stay open until early October while others close. Hotel H1898 and Sky Bar at the Grand Central are open in October but may be closed by the end of the month. For a good place that's social and not packed with super young people I would go to Marula in the Gothic Quarter. There's also Moog or La Fira. These are clubs but not ridiculous multi room places packed with students. For some micro brew pubs you can't go wrong with Fabrica Moritz or Cervecera Artisana. Hope this gets you on the right track! Ash

HI. I'm American, my boyfriend is European. We're both well-traveled and enjoy international places and people. We'll be in Barcelona 5 days during a 6 week European trip, staying in a nice airbnb in the Gothic area of the city. While we're there we'll celebrate his 40th birthday, which of course I want to make special for him (though the trip is already special!) I've noted Boca China as a "must go," (thanks for that tip), also noted Ocanacafe as a place with Jazz, Paradiso as a possibility and Bar Marsella for a real absinthe experience. Sol Soler sounded good to grab a bite on a terrace in a square . . we like music and to mix it up. On our last vacation, in the Caribbean, we did a great reggae bar one night, a fantastic piano bar with a lot of atmosphere another, and a nightclub for dancing yet another. Where do you recommend for jazz or blues music in Barcelona and what do you recommend for a nightclub that won't require us to be dressed to the nines (but not sloppy), won't be all 20-somethings, would have a great mix of music (perhaps a great dj, I've read some things about that), and attracts a more international set? Your helps greatly appreciated. An overwhelming amount of info out there!

Hi Greta, Thanks so much for writing in and I am glad to help :) Let's see, you've definitely got a great base of bars here and going to all the ones listed seems like a great way to really enjoy the city. For jazz and blues music look no further than the Harlem Jazz Club right in the heart of the Gothic Quarter. For the club I really like going to this place called Marula because even though it's casual it's not one of these places full of people in their early 20's getting ridiculous. It's a good mix of people and music and totally unpretentious, even if the decor is quite nice. If you're into electro music and DJs my best spot for a good local/international feel would be Moog... it's small but action packed and again totally unpretentious. Anyway, hope this helps... but really you can't go wrong with any of the things you've mentioned so enjoy! Sounds like you've got an amazing stay planned. Ash

Ash, It was great to wake up and see your reply! Thank you! With your recommendations, I feel like my notes of possibilities for the Barcelona part of our adventure are coming to completion. If you know of any "must go" places, restaurants, bars or excursions for travelers like Roel and I, or any reliable websites on Spain to simplify planning, please let me know. The internet has TOO MUCH INFO. I was really happy to stumble onto you! Because we'll be spending time in Amsterdam, where he is from, then Paris, then Barcelona, after Barcelona we're taking a beach break in Peniscola a few days, then 10 days in Malaga, then over to Morocco. On our trek back to Holland we're staying at various places in France for just a couple nights each. We want to check out Malaga for real estate, though we may entirely change our minds on this trip! Neither of us have been to southern Spain. Anyway, I digress. If you have any further tips on Barcelona, Spain or can recommend other great websites, I welcome the info. Again, thank you! - Greta

Wow Greta that's a massive trip you have an it gets me excited myself! I've worked with a few other bloggers I really like, for example Probe Around the Globe or Nomadic Matt. Give them a look for stuff outside of Barcelona (or even in!). Spanish Sabores is also a great window into Spain through its food. One must go in Barcelona for couples would be the Bunkers of Carmel - take a look. YOu may also want to consider getting out of town a bit and check out the Costa Brava because the beaches are stupendous. Anyway, some things to think about! As if you didn't have enough already ;) Ash

Ash, A group of 8 of us are traveling from the US to Barcelona for a vacation next week. We are staying in an Airbnb in Gràcia. We are all 20 years old. We are looking for some good bars and clubs that fit our age group and would allow us to meet people. Pop, hip-hop, or electronic music fits, but really anything is fine with us. What would you recommend for this time of year? Thank you so much!

Hi Andy, I'm sure you've got a decent idea of which bars in this list would serve you well... but I'll add another couple, let me know what you think. First off for young college-like crowds, super cheap prices, and bench seating that forces you to be social you should consider the Oveja Negra... probably the best spot to meet people in the city. The city's biggest club that has multiple rooms over multiple floors is Razzmatazz and a lot of my American readers have been impressed with this not only for its sheer size but the variety... it's also easy striking distance from Gracia. Also, if you're in the mood for partying on Monday there's the Erasmus student night called Nasty Mondays at Apolo. You can't go wrong with any of the beachside bars, that are touristy but give that Med ambiance and perfect opportunities to meet people. Pacha, Opium, or Catwalk are great options. At the Port Olympic down by the boats there are also about a dozen clubs back to back and none of them charge cover, so you can do an amazing crawl there and find out what tickles your fancy. It's packed with young people. If you haven't already read my nightlife guide I suggest you do: https://www.barcelonahacks.com/barcelona-nightlife/ There'll be more expanded information on some of these bars there. Finally, for a day drinking vibe with some affordable Spanish fast food you can't miss La Xampanyeria - if you buy even a tiny tapas plate to a share a bottle of local rose cava wine will only set you back about 4 euro. The place is packed and easy to meet people. OK, hope I've been of help! Ash

Hi again Tom, To my knowledge all the ones I've recommended are all seasonal and closed over the holiday season... I will ask around and see if I can dig anything up for you. If I were you I'd bundle up and bring some of your own drinks up to The Bunkers because it's the best view in the city by far... and it's the city's best photography spot. On a crisp winter day at sunset it won't get any better. Anyway, I'll keep my eye out on some winter rooftops but I haven't heard of any! Ash

Ash, some really useful tips and information. I read your other blogs too and found them incredibly helpful. We are a group of friends traveling to Barcelona from India in October. We will be there for 2 nights and will be staying near Placa d'Espanaya. One one night we would like to go clubbing (late night) and on the other night maybe some cocktails/drinks (early evening). We can use this guide for the second evening. For clubbing, initially, thought of Razzmatazz but read a lot of negative reviews about the crowds and theft of valuables. Dropped the idea. Thought of picking one from: Sala Apolo (close to our place)/ Moog/ Shoko/ Opium. But now I am confused since you say that Shoko/Opium are tourist trap clubs in one of your blogs. Could you please suggest a good club where we can go partying late night? We are mainly looking for it to be safe, traveling easy (with cabs availability at night), enjoyable and lively (esp. since we are visiting in October). Not looking for something very expensive. Looking forward to your recommendation.

Hi Darshan, First off thanks for the compliments on the blog, I am glad I can help :) Yes it's a bit of an information overload isn't it? I say that Opium/Shoko are tourist traps perhaps out of a personal bias... locals simply don't consider these clubs, the drinks are a bit expensive, and I'm not a big fan of 'fancy' clubs. That said a lot of tourists really enjoy them. At the end of the day all of the clubs you mentioned have their pros and cons... it depends what you're looking for. If you could tell me your ages, what type of music you want, are you looking to meet people, do you want to dance, what type of club you really like going to at home etc. I could pick a really good one for you. Right now since you said you don't want to spend a lot of money I am leaning toward Apolo (you could probably walk there, the drinks are much cheaper than Shoko/Opium, and there's a bigger local vibe there)... but again, maybe with some more information I could help you even further. Please let me know, I am here to help :) Ash
