What Museums Do I Get With ArticketBCN?

Picasso Museum Barcelona

Area: El Gotico | Carrer Montcada, 15-23 | Metro: Jaume I (L4) | Website

The most extensive Picasso collection under any one roof: 4355 works of art in the permanent collection.

The Barcelona Picasso Museum houses rich, impressive pieces mostly of his earliest work. With ArticketBCN you’ll skip the exhausting queues – with over 1,000,000 visitors a year this’ll be a life saver!

TIP: If you’re not familiar with Picasso make sure you get the incredibly well done, if slightly pricey audio set (€5) – you’ll be an expert in no time!

MACBA (the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art)

Area: Raval | Plaça dels Àngels, 1 | Metro: Universitat (L1 or L2) | Website

Referred to by some as Barcelona’s Tate Modern or Centre Pompidou, this famous museum was built by architect Richard Meier.

You’ll find a complex vision of contemporary culture, in which today’s art becomes a key element for understanding current social, economical and political dynamics – and free wifi!

TIP: Here photography is not prohibited, but actively encouraged!

Joan Miro Foundation

Area: Montjuïc | Parc de Montjuïc | Bus: 55 and 150 (Parc de Montjuïc) | Website

Hosting the best collection of internationally acclaimed surrealist painter and sculptor Joan Mirò.  His contempt for conventional painting methods is seen in his many paintings, sculptures and other graphics.

TIP: Haters of steep walks/buses may prefer a 3-4 euro taxi up Montjuic Hill from Espanya. Flag it outside the station on Paral-lel Street for the shortest ride.

TIP 2: If you’re walking grab some food at Las Arenas shopping centre, stop half way up the hill, and have a picnic overlooking Barcelona.

CCCB (Barcelona Center for Contemporary Culture)

Area: Raval | Carrer de Montalegre, 5| Metro: Universitat (L1 or L2) | Website

Not so much art but an exhibition space for contemporary culture. Here you can find experimentation with artistic languages and codes; a meeting place for dialogue between academia and citizens.

Some exhibitions have been called everything from inspiring to disturbing… they once had a wall of robot heads who followed you with their eyes!

TIP: The public study room houses an impressive collections of books in multiple languages and has free wifi – a great place where I hang out pretending to be an intellectual while blogging about cheap Barcelona bars 😉

MNAC (Catalonian National Art Museum)

Area: Sants | Palau Nacional | Metro: Espanya (L1 or L3) | Website

A trip through the last 1,000 years of Catalan history through the visual arts noted for its outstanding collection of romanesque church paintings and Catalan modernisme. The rooftop offers a stunning panoramic view of Barcelona.

TIP: Make sure you grab the English leaflet at the entrance

TIP 2: In case you don’t see it all, your ArticketBCN is valid for two(!) visits to the MNAC.

TIP 3: Head to MNAC a bit later in the evening to catch the spectacular Fountain Show right after.

Antoni Tapies Foundation

Area: Eixample | Carrer d’Aragó, 255 | Metro: Passeig de Gracia (L2, L3, L4)| Website

This is the center for modern art created by revered Catalan artist Antoni Tapies. Here you’ll find abstract thinking art hung in large impressive spaces.

Works by Miro and Picasso have ended up here as well. Many tourists end up liking this more than the Picasso Museum. Go and find out for yourself!

TIP: Do sit through the entire short film on Tapies’ life – it has moved many to tears!

I understand many benefits of pre purchasing but just still working out my itinerary so wondering if I decide to purchase the Articketbcn at a museum ticket window instead of online, say, for instance at the Picasso Museum, would I be able to still skip the line and go right in after said purchase? I guess what I’m asking is the line situation at the Picasso Museum if you want to buy the Articketbcn. I understand there are usually long waits to get in and timed tickets. Is there usually a short line to actually buy tickets at the museum? And then if I buy the Articketbcn could I then skip the line?

Hi Linda, Don't quote me on this because I haven't heard of anybody doing this, but to my knowledge (having seen the lines and the Articket stand at the CCCB) you'll have to wait in regular lines to get the pass, but then be let straight in after. So you won't technically skip the line, but you won't have to re-do it once you've got the pass. If you're going to do this I would advise going on off-peak hours or on days (naturally) where there isn't free admission... here you're unlikely to get caught up in any long lines. Ash
